If you’re all aswoon for digital scale technology, you can’t do much better than the Withings Connected Body Scale, which launched abroad last month. Now it’s coming to the United States, with a new function: Twitter support.
Running off of four AAA batteries, the Withings Connected Body Scale connects to a PC or Mac via USB cable, and through the bundled software pairs with your Wi-Fi network. After that, everything’s wireless, and the Connected Body Scale sits in your bathroom, waiting to be used.
At that point, you go to the official website and set up a profile. There, you can enter the stats for every person in your house, estimating their height and weight. When they step on the scale, it will automatically identify who is standing on it; if it can’t identify you, it will give you a choice of users, and you simply pick who you are by tapping on an icon with your foot.
The Withings website then slurps in your data and shows you your weight loss progress. There’s also an app for that, of course: a dedicated Apple iPhone app that tracks your weight loss data. But the new functionality is the Twitter integration: you can now tell your scale to send your weight, body fat and BMI to Twitter either daily, weekly, monthly or every time you weigh yourself.
That’s sure to see your followers drop faster than your pounds, and as someone who has struggled with weight loss myself, I’m more than a little skeptical about broadcasting the current micro-state of my obesity.
